How do I know if my car battery is dying?
- A slow, dragging start on cold mornings
- Dim headlights at idle, or lights that flicker when you start
- A battery or charging warning light
- Corrosion on the terminals, or a swollen case
- A battery more than three or four years old
Batteries often fail without warning in the first hard frost. A test takes about 10 minutes and gives a clear answer.
How do you test a car battery?
We test cold-cranking power and state of charge, and check the charging system so a weak alternator isn't mistaken for a bad battery. It takes about 10 minutes.
If it passes, you're on your way. If not, we show you the result and quote a replacement before touching anything.
How long does a car battery last in Canadian winters?
Approximately 3 to 5 years in Ontario, though it varies. Cold weather cuts starting power, and short trips never fully recharge the battery. Once it's past three years old, have it tested every fall.
Does my car need an AGM battery?
- Conventional
- Standard flooded battery for most cars without start-stop, typically the most economical option.
- EFB
- Enhanced flooded battery for entry-level start-stop systems.
- AGM
- For start-stop and cars with heavy electrical loads. If your car came with AGM, replace it with AGM; it costs more than a conventional battery.
Price depends on the battery type and the size your vehicle takes; replacement usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
